Shear distortion of turbulence in a stratified atmosphere

The effect of stable stratification on the evolution of Kelvin modes subjected to strong uniform shear is analysed under the assumptions of rapid distortion theory. We seek to elucidate the manner in which stratification influences and sometimes inhibits the formation of streamwise vortices.
